Hello! - couple of questions regarding joining

Post by Elise Thaller »

Heya! I've been playing Jedi Academy for almost 11 years now but I've never heard of an RP server :(. Before I even try to get into making a character I have couple of questions that will decide my fate whether or not I'll be joining here :(.

  • As someone who has minimal/casual knowledge of SW lore, would I be accepted in your community? And by minimal I mean that I've only watched the movies and it's been quite a while since I've re-watched them so I most likely forgot some things.
  • My knowledge of English is quite mediocre, dare I say, below average? I can understand it and I think people can understand me as well, but my grammar really isn't that good. That being said, do you guys accept people with average english skills?
  • When you combine my lack of SW lore knowledge and questionable english, would I be accepted?
  • If the answers to all of these are yes, then I'd like to know if you guys have a discord server where I could join and ask more questions!

Yup! Having minimal/casual knowledge can actually be beneficial to you in a way, as you can turn it into RP, having your character learn as you do.

Judging by this post alone, I'd say you would be fine. As long as you can be understood, it's perfectly fine. We're not grammar nazi's around here. And, I believe some people in the past who are aware they're not totally good at English have used it to enhance their own characters, by playing non-human races.

There are a bunch of things you can read listed here viewtopic.php?f=101&t=10390 that might further answer any questions you might have.

Hello Elise and welcome to the Jedi Academy RP community! We are happy to have you here!

The best Star Wars stories and characters are those that are still compelling and enjoyable even when you strip all the lore and Star Wars stuff away. A casual knowledge of the lore and an open mind will be more than enough for you to have fun in the community!

English is the second language of many of our members and we will never fault you for the occasional moment where things get lost in translation or typo'd. Never feel bad about asking for clarification either on the Forum, Discord, or out-of-character in game via private messages. Also, we have a list of ::JEDI:: members who are bi-lingual and are ready to make themselves available to explain things in a language you are more comfortable with.

Finally, we do have a Discord server but I'm not 100% sure how to invite you or if we are still inviting folks who are not yet members. I will leave that to one of the more tech savvy and knowledgeable people who are sure to reply below.

Good to hear from you and welcome, once again!

Elise,

I'll be honest with you: the only thing we care about is your RP, and how well you mesh with the community. Star Wars lore is something you tend to gain over time, and we have numerous members who speak English as a second or even third language - and, as long as we can understand you, and you can understand us, it doesn't matter if you mangle the occasional sentence!

We do indeed have a Discord server, and you're welcome to come and join us there: https://discord.gg/ZZGWH4C4

We'll do our best to answer any questions you might have.

And, for the record, you even know how to use commas properly, so I doubt your English is as lacking as you seem to think! Don't worry about it!

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome!

That sounds like great news for me then! I shall join the discord and start reading the necessary guides/topics!

Thank you very much Teynara, that's kind of you! I forgot to mention that my RP-ing is quite basic sadly, specially when I try to describe a situation or an action that my character is about to do but I am hoping to learn that here!

Elise,

I find it helps to go a little 'method', personally: put yourself directly in your character's shoes, and try and perceive the situation as they would. How do you feel? What might you think? How would those thoughts and feelings appear on your face, or be expressed by your body language?

I wouldn't worry too much about your RP being basic: we've had a lot of people come through with undeveloped RP skills over the years, but you'll pick it all up pretty quickly, both through observing everyone else, and through actively participating. It'll happen fairly quickly, you needn't worry!

That's a good idea actually, never thought of it that way, silly me . I forgot to ask one more thing,

is it possible to play on the server without joining first? Or does one have to apply and get accepted first?

Also! I just realized that my name doesn't quite fit with the names that SW uses :(, is it possible to be renamed on the forum?

It's entirely possible, and indeed required that you join us on the server.

You'll start out as a 'Hopeful', a character of your own design, often a youngling, since it's rare for adults to start their training as Jedi at a later age. During this period, you'll get to know the community (and we'll get to know you), and hopefully you'll fit in rather neatly. If we like you, you'll eventually be 'Initiated', which means your character will become an Initiate, the lowest rank among our student body, and you'll begin Jedi training.

As a Hopeful, you've got two obligations:
  • Participate in RP on the server - feel free to attend lessons, socialise etc
  • Send in an application for your character, as discussed here
And do feel free to join us on Discord, and if you've got any more questions, please do ask. We're always here to help - whether it's a question about the OOC aspects of the community, about your character, or just about the community in general.

It is quite possible to have your account renamed. But, I personally see no problem with using 'Elise Thaller' as a name.

the biggest thing with the names, is it should be fitting for your race. And so, your name would be perfectly fine, imo, for a human character.

Sounds good to me then! Other than the RP mod, am I required to download all the essential files that you guys use?

Yeah, I was thinking of a human character and it's even recommended if one is a newbie!

Not everything, but it helps to grab everything in Landing Requirements, and useful to grab people's models, too, so you can actually see us in-game.

Player skins, hilt pack, weapons, and vehicle pack are the ones I'd personally consider a requirement.

I say the vehicle pack is, simply because if you don't have a vehicle that a Knight+ tries to spawn in, it will crash you.

The music pack is largely optional because it just adds ambiance, but I do feel like you might miss out on some of the feeling of the RP without it as Knights might change the music to fit a current mood going on. But if you're concerned about space on your harddrive, this can be a good one to skip.

Thankfully the rpmod launcher has a tab called "updates" that helps out a great deal with keeping everything up to date and download stuff. Even if sometimes I feel it's painfully slow.
