Has anyone bought JKA from Steam yet? If so, did you have any troubles/conflicts trying to install/run RPMod with it?
I don't have my original disks anymore and was looking to get it off Steam but I don't know if there will be any problems or conflicts with RPMod.

If anyone has done this could you let me know how you got on?

Cheers in advance

I did do it, and still have it on steam, and I *believe* it works. The reason why I am not entirely sure is due to the fact it was over a year ago and I am now using disks.

Having made the switch, it might of been for that reason, but I am pretty sure I had it up and running...

Lota use that was.

Steam just installs the game files - and it's automatically patched, but the Base and GameData folders are all still there, so it should work as well as CD-installed JKA. The major difference (naturally) will be that the installation folder will be VERY well concealed (usually in C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\Common\Lucasarts\Jedi Knight Jedi Academy\Gamedata\Base)...

I run JKA via Steam and RPMod runs just fine. The only "problem", if you can call it that, is due to the way JKA's separate SP and MP executables are handled. Basically, a separate shortcut for RPMod doesn't work because Steam automatically launches SP.

To get RPMod to work with Steam, install as normal (the default directory is C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\jedi academy\GameData etc), then right-click on JKA in your Steam library and select properties.

Image

Now click Set Launch Options and type in +set fs_game rpmod as you would with a regular Windows shortcut.

Now when you launch JKA, RPMod will be loaded automatically. If you want to go back to BaseJKA, you'll have to go back in and delete the fs_game line. It's a minor inconvenience but it's a small price to pay for not needing the disk to play.

That's nice, I lost my CD's to JKA too, and luckilly steam still has a way to get it.. I'll give this a shot, thanks.

Edit: I've been trying to get it off with a download because simply my bought CD's wont work, now that I see how cheap it is on steam my wasted time might aswell go with a simple buy for that low price.. :P

Don't get me wrong, I think Steam is a great service, but if you've already bought and paid for the game once or twice now then you shouldn't have any reservations about torrenting it. ISO's are easier to manage and mount.

Heh technically speaking.. I've never bought JKA before lol. I used to steal Vantus's disks :P

As for Nira's suggestion. I tried that but the issue now is that steam doesn't seem to recognise JKA Multiplayer when you click an external shortcut. It always loads single player for some reason. I've checked all the links too and it's definitely set to jamp.exe sooo /shrug.
I spoke to Soh and just tossed RPMod's assests into the base folder and the game works fine. I just can't play any other mods that way. Not that i did to begin with mind you lol

Yeah, I just run JKA from the Steam library and a dialogue box will appear with a choice of single-player or multiplayer, much like the launcher of old. If you want to run other mods, just change the command line to point the relevant mod directory (MB2, japlus, etc).

My Steam and JKA with RPMod work fine, I just had to add a shortcut to jamp, exe and add the +setgame rpmod +connect ip (I know they're not the ACTUAL text to put down but you know what I mean). Only problem is I had to download the original jamp.exe file which would make Steam think I don't have a disk. I've worked a way around that so if you wanna know, just PM.

Only problem I have now is when I run the shortcut through Steam, it'll launch JA+. Got the same target and start in boxes the same as the shortcut from the installer, have no idea why it wants to run JA+. Hoping to find a way around this but it probably just needs a reinstall. It's never happened before, but it might have been when I accidentally put the rpmod folder in the japlus folder and tried to run it.

Other than that, it works just as well on Steam as it would buying the disks. The only difference is it auto updates and installs in a different directory, as said above.

EDIT: Fixed. Works fine now
