I think I have gotten this all wrong. I now realize that you guys create your own skins through a 3D modelling software right?

Not really. We edit the textures of existing models with Photoshop or other different programs. If you're interested in making your own skin, you can follow this tutorial ...

Now that I'm back, I should probably start off with a fine simulation. I'll be happy to attend this one.
