If you heard at the end, Snoke says something about "Completing Kylo Ren's training" so maybe he isn't even at his full potential. Kylo in my opinion was more of a bad guy that had to ACT tough instead of actually BEING tough. He had the skill with the Force, clearly. But with a Lightsabe...
