Less... Jedi-y classes

Post by Tycho Varga »

What I mean by this, is we have an abundance of classes relating to the Force, Sabers, technical artisan, diplomacy, governments...

But how about something more... Normal? I had talks with someone earlier today in RP when this realization kind of hit, and Rhu's class request about plant identification helped solidify the idea in my mind.

There are also hopefulls that come in not knowing how to read or write, and this could also apply to them. It might not be something the older students are interested in, but if they wanted to (especially Padawans), they could come in and perhaps get some teaching experience in with helping one of the younger characters learning this vital skill.

But then there's also cooking. Tycho, for instance, can jump buildings, deflect blaster fire and use the power of his mind to lift someone up into the air and push them around. But... Ask him to cook and he wouldn't know where to begin and might create something that causes someone to spend the rest of the night in the bathroom.

I just think it'd be cool to have these kind of 'normal' classes to help break up the pace a little with the samey kind of things when it comes to lessons.

I think that this is a more than just good idea.

It can help storytelling in a multitude of ways. People can arrange said 'Less Jedi-y' or Utility classes as a means to a 'breather'. A way to provide content, engage with the students, get to know them, even bond with them over a process. It can also provide, as Tycho said, a variety between the subjects taught. While certain lessons, in my opinion beginner classes, should be repeated often for the newer denizens of the Praxeum; it could provide that extra flair and take away the feeling of repetition one might get otherwise.

Many a time I have heard about the Jedi needing to focus on other things as well, despite the Force. Realizing that using it constantly might end up being a crutch. One that will crumble, with them falling over, should it be removed from the equation. Hence we have been advised often to make sure we pick up skills and knowledges that we can use in general, not only apply them 'on the field'.

Can't wait to see something like that realized, and a good nod to Rhuacca's class request, which made me too think of the same thing and I was pleasantly surprised to see on the list.

We are in a school of space wizards. Rather than "less", I would say "vary". I agree with doing more "common" classes about education and such, but I think that it doesn't necessarily mean that we should have less of Jedi studies.

To add to that, I was really expecting a lot more education and tradition lectures when I introduced my character and whilst I had some, it was way too few, so I definitely think we should push this forward as it could make for some interesting character progression.

I'm not saying we should have less classes, I meant 'less' as in just having classes in general that aren't jedi-y. More of those. Like you said, it's an RP about being space wizards, but it'd just be nice to have some of these extra classes that are about being a living person rather than space wizard.

As long as it doesn't undermine the Jedi ones, thumbs up.

I think this board is more for... our systems' technical suggestions, but either way—

I have been around for quite a while and I have had my fair experience of classes when I have played a student and I must say, that thankfully, I do still remember plenty of them being centered not only in regards to... the Jedi-academic kind. They were indeed rarer, though, but I do recall the Councilors of the time, too, indulging in said classes.

I will agree that seeing such classes being held can be intriguing and turn out to be fun in most cases. Although, I will say that I believe that, as you have already pointed out, they shouldn't obviously take the place of what you'd expect out of a Jedi's training.

But they are indeed a nice cherry on top of it all, not only for your characters to learn a new set of skills, but also develop and add onto their maturity— but, most importantly, scenarios like those also allow for nice moments between peers and have fun all together.

I wouldn't go for 'less Jedi-y classes' but I am definitely a supporter of varying at times; enjoy said roleplay and possibly learn something out of it in-character. Do not hesitate to approach Knights and Masters for things like these, too.

Let's be real, these classes are certain to take place in the Praxeum. A Jedi might be a monk, but most of them are not apart from the societies they live in. This would mean that they require some basic skills to function as adults, as well as survivalist skills to make certain they don't die the first time they are outside civilization.

And the subject can range from practical (how to run first level maintenance on devices such as comms, breathers etc) to theoritical (Republic law, A primer on the physical arts etc).

Finally, OOC wise, I think that these classes are an excellent idea, and can actually provide the IC and OOC means to improve a student's teaching skills. It will also require less strict moderation from Knights, as the primary concern will be "Just make sure they do not blow the room up" rather than "Make sure the student does not get a false idea about a critical facet of Jedi Training".

All in all, I love this idea.

As far as I'm concerned I always tell new hopefuls and Initiates to spend time in the archives to learn reading, math and that sort of basic stuff.
We have RPed having a whole selection of basic teachings in the archives. So feel free to RP there. (Little bit of promotion there, doing my part you know?)

Of course, lessons are still a cool options and can happen, but you don't have to limit yourself in a certain basic skill because you weren't taught in an actual lesson.

Anything that has to do with basic schooling can be acquired knowledge in the archives. I mean we don't have actual teaching degree's in real life... so- I'm not going to teach someone about the core aspects of philosophy as they would in a school, but I will teach philosophy based on the Jedi, The Force, Etc.

While I do see Aiden's point and agree with him somewhat, I see Tycho's point of view and support it. Say for example those characters who can't read. What of them? While there are many skills that can be learned in the Archives, some require, and sorry if it sounds weird, but some skills cant be taught by text and self-application. Some skills require someone who's good at it and knows how their trainee thinks to teach them.
