A While back there were a few arguments about what sort of music could and couldn't be relevant to your character.
I personally think that considering the importance Music has in the real world, Music is one of the most cruelly underused devices in the Star Wars Universe.
How come?
There are only about 5 pieces of diagetic (as in, what the characters themselves can hear) music in all of the films. The rest is fairly Romantic/Twentieth Century, non-diagetic film scoring.
The Music article on Wookieepedia demonstrates this pretty aptly http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Music
However, if one considers that 'Jizz' is basically Jazz, and that was already an old genre 265 years before our current era, there's no reason to believe that genres like Heavy Metal, Rock, Dance, Techno, Ambient and Trance music wouldn't exist.
Indeed, electronic music was highly popular in the KOTOR era. And nearly every single one of those genres I mentioned just now is alluded to with a different name - e.g. Heavy Isotope instead of Heavy Metal.
So basically, as far as I'm concerned, there's a huge scope of possible genres, they just have to make sense in the context of the canonical ones.
That aside, your characters 'Theme' or Lietmotif as a cinematic device would usually be instrumental and in the John Williams (or other 'classical') style, because frankly, a 'Theme' or Lietmotif is a classical/dramatic device. It would exist for the benefit of the viewers and your character wouldn't hear it.
If on the other hand you're proposing Music your character might enjoy, In Universe, keep in mind what Knight Feraan said, and that's all of the overtly emotive/melodramatic teen angst is being beaten out of you from year nought because you're training to be a Jedi...
