I can easily share this tid-bit. If you make a lightsaber, and when you go in-game to try it out, and it tells you that there are too many verts. What you have to do, is split the lightsaber up. So instead of having just one whole shaft, you'll have to make it into parts.

In accordance with what Illrian posted, it isn't really necessary to make the cylinder you start with have 30 sides and 10 height segments (determines vert count). You won't see super high vert counts ingame because the saber doesn't stand out as much as an actual player model.
