I would have to say it was Palpatine's lightning, which after grabbing him was buzzing the crap out of him. I know Luke said to him 'But you'll die.' When we was asked to remove the Mask, but Vader responded something along the lines.. 'I think it's already too late for that' Meaning he was already dying of something else.
Or maybe it was a machine breakdown when Luke cut his hand off, but Im going to go with Papa Palpatine's Lightning.

It is partially Palpy's lightnings that wounded him badly, almost killed him.
But the EU reason is that Palpatine, when he reconstructed Vader after Mustafar, bonded to him (i.e. Krea and the Exile). And remember the line "I must obey my Master" a bit earlier
So it is a combo of Palpy's lightning + Palpy's bond to Vader
