[SPOILERS] SW Ep. VIII: The Last Jedi Discussion Thread
Re: [SPOILERS] SW Ep. VIII: The Last Jedi Discussion Thread
I did have a thought for a way they could have demonstrated Leias abilities, without putting her in the most BS situation, by having her create a protective bubble around the bridge so they could evac after the explosion, without killing everyone but her.

To quote another fantastical galactic romp: "I'm Mary Poppins Y'all!"Kira Alde wrote:I did have a thought for a way they could have demonstrated Leias abilities, without putting her in the most BS situation, by having her create a protective bubble around the bridge so they could evac after the explosion, without killing everyone but her.
I think that this was the most visually pleasing Star Wars movie to date. I found a quote that encapsulates on of my favorite moments in the movie that I'd like to share. The staff of the online publication The Ringer was asked to do a tweet-length exit poll on the movie and this was one of their contributor's responses:
SourceBaumann: Vice Admiral Holdo’s fleet-destroying hyperspace jump. There’s nothing in the visual vocabulary of the eight previous Star Wars movies that’s remotely like that—you spend 40 years setting up a signature look so that when you break it, it’s as effective and world-tilting as that moment was.
I need 'Suicide By Lightspeed' blown up and plastered on my bedroom wall. The way that scene sears itself into your corneas and then proceeds to tickle the backsides of your pupils with a shift to the sparkles and glitter was truly a spectacular sight.

Re: [SPOILERS] SW Ep. VIII: The Last Jedi Discussion Thread
I thoroughly enjoyed this film watching it for the first time. I really enjoyed that they added to the mythos of what the Jedi are, what the Force *is*, and that they took these characters in directions that make sense.
To me, the biggest flaw in the film was the Rose/Finn arc, which didn't resonate with me. It helped redeem Finn for me a bit, with Rose making the big speech about stunning the cowards trying to flee, and that in turn made Finn willing to sacrifice himself for the cause, EVEN THOUGH we learned nothing about WHY he fled in The Force Awakens.
Some of the decisions made in this film by Rian Johnson leave me scratching my head, destroying certain expectations. Snoke dying at the hands of Kylo was surprising to me, but only because we literally learned NOTHING about him, other than his strength as a Force user, to rag-doll people quite easily. In the context of the plot, it made total sense for Kylo to do it.
I don't quite buy Kylo's explanation about who Rey's parents are. We can only take him at face value, which is hard to do, considering where he actually sides in this story. Maybe the true reveal will happen in Episode IX.
The confrontation between Poe and Holdo could have been allieviated if she just pulled him aside, and said "Hey, I have this plan, you should trust me, because Leia does." That might have caused Poe to challenge her, or maybe, he wouldn't care because she didn't tell him the whole plan, and sent Finn & Rose off anyways.
I've got more to say, but I'm going to wait until I see it again on Friday.
As it stands it's an 8/10.

Can I remind all you Snoke disappointments that when the Emperor was revealed in Empire, He was subsequently killed off WITHOUT A BACKSTORY, albeit we got on a decade later, but just bare that in mind, please. He served the story of Kylo Ren

Re: [SPOILERS] SW Ep. VIII: The Last Jedi Discussion Thread
Liked it a lot. I enjoyed the risks and choices characters were forced to take. I hated one scene which was Leia’s nonsensical force flight/force pull/whatever the hell they want to label it. She was useless for the rest of the movie. Should have killed her off. Would have been a great send off for her character.
All in all, very good movie. Probably best SW movie. Won’t capture the magic of the originals, but has its own magic.

Re: [SPOILERS] SW Ep. VIII: The Last Jedi Discussion Thread
I liked the movie. Didn't love it. Didn't hate it.
It was magic in some places and dreadful in others.
I would have preferred it Holdo and Leia had switched places. Would have been a MAGNIFICENT send off for Carrie Fisher...as that scene is one of the top three moments for me in the movie. Also would have given Holdo a chance at some character development in the next film. A new Mon Mothma/Leia/Padme figure. The political head of state.
The other top two scenes for me were the Yoda cameo, and Rey and Kylo facing the Praetorian Guard.
The semblance of character that was Luke Skywalker was wasted in this movie. Maz Kanata was also wasted in this movie. Phasma as well.
Speaking as someone who HATED Kylo Ren in The Force Awakens, I LOVED him here. Easily the most interesting character in the entire film. Strangely enough, I really liked Rey in the Force Awakens, but not so much here. Curious how these have flip flopped.
Where is Luke's green saber? It wasn't destroyed on the Death Star 2 cause he had it in the flashback.
I like Poe...but I don't like the insubordinate tone he gives in this film. (I do like how he later quotes Holdo though.)
Finn and Rose seem kind of pointless to me...as they don't really accomplish anything. (Rose's sister seemed more interesting, given what she does at the beginning of the film.) I -DID- like the design and feel of Canto Bight (even if I wasn't a huge fan of the story.) It reminded me of the look and feel of the prequels, (Naboo / Coruscant) mixed in with the original trilogy (TIE Fighters / X-Wings.) As an aside, I really enjoyed the uniforms/armor the Casino Police wore. Reminded of something you might see in one of the KOTOR games, or The Old Republic.
I liked the character of DJ (The Slicer)...even after he betrayed Finn and Rose. But again, his potential was wasted as he just vanishes. How does he get off the Supremacy? As a character who seems capable of switching sides so easily just to favor himself...I would have thought after the Supremacy is cut in two, it would have been him inside that ATST firing on the first order to save Finn and Rose. Instead we get BB-8. (Not that I am complaining. I love BB-8)
Would have liked more R2 and 3P0. Hopefully next movie now that they are reunited. (LOVED the one scene R2 was actually in. I get that playing the Leia message might seem a bit heavy handed but given the circumstances with Carrie Fishers passing, I absolutely ate it up.)
In closing...hopefully J.J.Abrams has what it takes to tie everything that seems so disjointed from one another between the Force Awakens and The Last Jedi into some grand plan story telling device in the last part of the Trilogy. The best thing that I think can be said is that no one can be really sure of how everything will end...because there is still so much that we don't know.

Re: [SPOILERS] SW Ep. VIII: The Last Jedi Discussion Thread
I just watched it, yeah I know I'm pretty late to the party, and I'll give this a solid 6/10. I could add one bonus point just for the entire lightspeed kamikaze sequence, that was dfpoqqgodsgqi amazing, but I'm a jerk and I don't like where all of it is going.
Yoda, Luke and Kylo, really cool little face-off but a big let down as Luke disappears. Not enough power man, not enough power.
Phasma, that was lame. Rose and Finn relationship, also lame. AAAHH GOD BLEGH SNOKE JUST.. DYING LIKE THAT ? KILL ME THIS INSTANT. But instantly redeemed with Rey and Ben teaming up. Okay half redeemed, because the choreographies are still lame in this movie and I'm betting it won't improve in the next movie or ever for that matter.
Nevertheless, I enjoyed the movie but it's still a big meh as I keep thinking about it in general.
"....salt."
EDIT: I changed my mind, 5/10 and I'll add the bonus point for the kamikaze sequence.

Also late for this but i wanted to say one thing: Ackbar should have been in Holdo's place. This universe has a ton of characters, might as well utilize them in a clever way. It would make more impact than having someone you just met die like that. And if it worked (because it did) for Holdo that we got to know over that very movie, imagine how well it would have worked for someone we have known for years.
That is my only problem with the movie actually. Even Leia did not bother me but that might have been for the same reason stated above in a previous post. I loved yoda. It felt so awesome seeing grandpa Luke feeling like a young padawan again. Truly captures the whole "you never stop learning feeling. Just wish he wasnt thinking about killing a minor just then XD

They couldn't have put Ackbar in Holdo's place unfortunately. Shortly after TFA released, Erik Bauersfeld (the actor who played him), passed away.Sirius Invictus wrote:Also late for this but i wanted to say one thing: Ackbar should have been in Holdo's place. Re: [SPOILERS] SW Ep. VIII: The Last Jedi Discussion Thread
Kenny Baker passed and we still have R2. Peter Mayhew stepped out of the fur for the last Jedi yet we still had Chewie. It's easy for them to recast actors who are in suits, especially one like Ackbar who had little screen time to begin with. Ackbar would've been good in Holdo's place, and then they could use her to move into a new Leia/Mon Mothma role.Dariun Antane wrote:They couldn't have put Ackbar in Holdo's place unfortunately.
