Auto-Update

Alright, here we go
Originally, I was thinking about the many advertisement posters found on various maps, as well as newsfeeds, and I thought that it would be nice to offer supplemental image pk3s that would overwrite these images on a regular basis so as to give the effect of time-progression.
I then realized that it would require a lot of updating and downloading, and that such a thing could be problematic.
SO I began to think that some sort of auto-update feature could be nice, perhaps in the form of a separate .exe that you run, that checks a remote server (such as our website) for updated files compared to those found in the user's rpmod folder, downloads those updated files, then runs jamp.exe +rpmod.
Gotta go now, I'll write more later perhaps.

Basically a sort of in game HoloNews board that gets updated regularly.
That's pretty neat. Maybe it can be implemented into the revised map that Kaelen is working on?

Such a feature would indeed be extremely useful for the use case you described, but also to deploy new versions of RPMod and clan packages (weapon pack, etc.)
Added to the TODO list with moderate priority, but I hope to do it this summer.

This is, in part, something I've already implemented. I hadn't thought an auto updater was possible but was considering proposing a monthly download like that of the vehicle.pk3 and weapons.pk3 for news bulletins. What I've done is create several toggleable images on top of one another than can be changed via the admin room. These images were named news1, news2, news3. So everytime there was something you wanted up, you toggle the according image. Then you just replace the images each month like we do with the A2maps textures and music currently.
I couldn't think of an easier way to do it but if there is an auto update method then that's great..
Again, i'm not sure what's suggested above is actually possible remotely but if you can find a way -

Alright, so to finish my idea...
Like I said originally it was just a thought for the image updates, but then I began to think it could be used to do what you mentioned, Master Raun, in that it could deploy updates for RPMod, JEDI's files such as npcs, vehicles, sabers, and perhaps even skins. It could perhaps have a customizable list of sources for the updates, so that if a user didn't want to download skin updates automatically, they'd simply remove or add the source. This could also be useful for when RPMod is more widely used among other clans.
But yeah, that's basically it, an auto-updater like that found in all kinds of software.

I like it, I would like to see live News Feed and what not in various maps that would be interesting.. and this auto-update would be -veryy- useful. Good catch Gabe

Gotta chime in on this.
Great idea Gabriel, but there's one thing that sticks out to me. For collectors such as myself that keep old files around until the end of time, the auto over-write thing could be a problem. Granted, it doesn't happen often, but every now and then a Hopeful or old member come around looking for X's skin from Y date or such. If over-writing is implemented, it could make this a troubling task for people. I don't think Soh or Erue would like to have every version of everyones skins archived on the server either.
If there were a feature added on so that when it downloads things, you could either turn off over-writing or be able to rename the new files or somehow make back-ups of the old files, that'd be great. Just something that'd let users keep their old files while downloading and using the new ones.

It would be neat if this or something similar could actually be implemented and function properly, but I do agree there are certain complications to it.

I still love this idea.

Yeah, that's why I proposed the customizable sources list, so that you could turn off auto-updating of any/all features.
