Water Surface Jumping
Water Surface Jumping
I'm sure there has been more than one occassion where you have found yourself bobbing up and down in the water like a buoy trying to get out of a pond or a pool (or fountain...).
Sometimes there looks to only be a tiny ledge yet your character continues to float around with no avail.
If this is a fixed-game mechanic that can only be changed by adding "ramps" in the water of maps then so be it.
I would however even extend this suggestion.
Would it be possible for people with a High Level jumping skill to be able to "jump" out of the water? It would need to be a high level jump skill like Jump 4 or 5 so that it doesn't become too common.
By "jump" I mean moving your character up to the surface of the water while holding jump and soaring out like a normal ground jump.
If the height of a full jump feels too unrealistic, perhaps water surface jumps could be limited to the height of Jump 1 or something. Just enough for a leap out of the water and onto the ground etc.

Eh, that seems a little overpowering. I like Vantus's suggestion, but it would seem a bit too much to have people bouncing off water and running across it.Sared Kilvan wrote:Likewise, could jump/speed be affected so that you could jump off of the water as if it were a solid surface, or run across it?

I agree. Vantus's suggestion is a good one, and I support it. I give no support for running across water, though. It's very unrealistic.

Slightly off-topic: We should perhaps stop to call some things unrealistic/overpowered. Almost always the things we see as unrealistic or overpowered are actually as unrealistic or overpowered as things we see as realistc/normal or things which are already added. In this case, running/jumping on water is as unrealistic/realistic or overpowered as shooting lightning, draining life, moving objects.
In contrary to lightning, draining or telekinesis, running-on-water is not as canonically present, though.
Personally, I think running on water is canonically rare. But I can still imagine a (charged?) Jump 5 to be able to run (a few steps) over water.
As for the quick Jump 1 hop out of the water, it's a nice idea.

Thats a little more along what I was thinking. Just a few steps that you could jump at the end of because of the sheer speed you were moving at.Lynee'alin wrote: Personally, I think running on water is canonically rare. I'm more interested in seeing if that is actually doable within the engine.

I have to agree there! I think that would take it in an unfavorable direction myself.Gabe Alkorda wrote:Eh, that seems a little overpowering. I do like the original idea though, although for our home map this shouldn't be an issue in future but sadly it still would with other maps. If possible I say go for it..

I like vantus' idea and Lynee has a point too; what if running a few steps on water was only applicable to someone with SPEED 4 or 5? sureley you can run on water in real life....it's just no one can run that fast I think some Jedi might be able to run fast enough (although briefly) to hit a step or two. Water has enough surface tension to feel like you hit concrete when you do a belly flop I'm just saying the idea isn't THAT "out-landish" for star wars. At least not as much as being able to jump 20 feet in the air.

This is Star Wars, not Naruto.
Being able to use the force to propel yourself out of water seems quite reasonable. Being able to run across it is taking things a little too far.
We have to be realistic within the unreal Space Opera that is Star Wars, our current templates/levels/powers are already a little overpowered compared to most canonical characters but that's a bi-product of the game mechanics and basic game play ideas. I'd rather not introduce something we've not seen in the EU as an attainable ability, just because it 'seems' reasonable.

To choose doubt as a philosophy of life is akin to choosing immobility as a means of transportation.

According to this diagram http://www.sheldonbrown.com/tires.html#hydroplaning
A bicycle tire with 2.8 bars at 40 PSI, will hydroplane at around 66 MPH or 105 Kilometers per hour. So if my math is correct...
A 6 foot tall man at a weight of 170 IBS with a single shoe with a surface area of around 34 inches squared (PSI of 5 pounds per square inch) can hydroplane at a speed of 45 Miles per hour.
With both feet it's only 22.5 MPH
So we could change it to add hydroplaning, maybe not running on water, but we could slip and slide quite a distane. Just look up barefoot water skiing on youtube lol.
I think this could have SOME applications, at least make it interesting. If there's an island in the middle of a lake, why jump to it when you can slip'n slide?!?!?!?! that's just me though.
