[CLOSED] BoltedFX Overflow!

Post by Gabe Alkorda »

I have no idea what causes this and apparently it's not seen globally, but sometimes I keep getting this random "BoltedFX Overflow!" errors. I don't remember seeing anyone post it, so I figured I'd be the first! :P

I've seen this happen as well, possibly the same time you experienced it. It was during the night map correct?

It's odd, it just started to happen for no apparent reason, could have been someone toying with weapons or something else though.

BoltedFX, in my common understanding, would be something to do with special effects. So it could be some sort of explosion or one of the reborns being disintegrated that caused it.

I think its one of the special effects packages that we use, so you might want to check out the readmes that the original authors included about those. On top of that, once the error occurs, I believe it still sends the client a return error on it for a set amount of time even after it has run its course. Usually doesn't last too long though, and I assumed it was client-side only. :(

hmm I see it often too and i'm pretty sure it started (or at least the first time I recal seeing it) was right after Soh released the RPMod update where you could attach effects to your character. Doesn't mean that's the cause heh but that is just when I first saw it and was the latest change made at that time.

That error is indeed linked to the "bolted effects", i.e. effects attached to a player or NPC. They can be added by /rpeffect, but are more often seen from Force powers like Heal (the blue effect is attached to you) or the "level up" effect. No external packs use bolted effects since they are specific to RPMod.

It is a bug to have an overflow there, since the limit is high enough to theoretically avoid them. However I can only troubleshoot the issue when it happens, so if you notice it don't hesitate to contact me on MSN :).

And in the meantime, admins can avoid huddling in secret rooms to play with them for giggles! :P

This wasn't caused by anyone spawning effects, it just came out of nowhere. I was sitting holding a group discussion when I started getting the error. The only other admin on was Master Kevari, and he was in spec.

You might not have been spawning any bolted effects, but someone might have been using an ability outside your field of vision. Students can use some of those too (Heal, Absorb, Protect) etc.

It seems this bug was caused by not cleaning up effects occurring while the player is not visible (too far, mind trick, nodraw, etc.), so new ones kept being added on top of previous ones until overflowing.

Anyway, this is theoretically fixed in my development version and will be released with the next RPMod update. Until then, if you see the "BoltedFX Overflow!" message while I'm in game, please tell me by PM so that I can confirm I don't see it anymore.

Fixed in 0.4.2
