Conversation Spam
Okay so we've all had that problem where the server would be pretty full and conversation and roleplay would be taking part in different sections of the map. And i know when you come out of a certain distance of a player that the sentence or words they have written become dulled out to basically tell you that your finding it hard to hear them.
But i think that if your allowed to hear the whole of the server speaking in different locations of the map, Not only is it hard to keep up with the conversation you are having and lose track of what people are saying. It takes away some of the roleplay. I cant help but look at some of the dulled out writing to see what is happening in different groups and then have to pretend i don't know anything about it.
Basically a new system could be created to get rid of both of these problems but maintain a certain view over what is going on within the server
Close range: The writing is at full contrast and is clearly visable
Medium range: The writing starts to become less bright and starts to dull
Long range: You can not see the writing at all
Personally i believe that this will create a better atmosphere within the server, Plus get rid of a constant wall of text that makes it hard to follow conversations and keep your mind on what you are doing. Instead of what someone else is saying on the other side of the map

If I remember correctly, this is already possible. I think it may have been Corinth that had a code/command or setting of sorts to achieve this. It removes the text from a certain distance from the screen but you can still check it via the console.
Otherwise, if not then perhaps as a toggle would be nice. It's always nice having options. Thumbs up from me.

Many (maybe Three or Four) people use this that I know of Including myself.
If you aren't within actual real life hearing range of me I can't see a word you are saying. However everything still logs console so it's mainly an RP perk to add realism. Good suggestion though. I encourage people to do things that promote realism. Maybe master Corinth, will leave the command to do this.
/chat_range_mode 0 (not correct) but it's something like that. Very simple request.

and that is exactly how it works.Close range: The writing is at full contrast and is clearly visable

Ah nice I was thinking about this but I wasn't sure if it was possible, or whether it'd cause issues. Nice that it is doable though. Keeping that command in mind.

Hmm i gave it a try out and done the command /rpc_chatrange_mode 0 or something like that. And it just made everyones speech bright like asif they were sitting right next to you talking even if they were at the other end of the map. Any help?

Client Configuration
rpc_chatRange_mode (default 1)
- 0 = don't use chat ranges at all (see everything with 100% opacity)
- 1 = display all messages, but fade them depending on the distance (below the min range will use 100% opacity, above the max range will use the min alpha)
- 2 = same as 1, but don't even display messages with a distance greater than the max range; they will still be faded between the min and max range.
- 3 = only display messages below the min range (no fading at all). But if you use this, be sure to increase the min range or you will miss a lot of messages (because 128 is really close).
- No matter what mode you choose, all chat text will still be displayed normally in the console.

This is possible without having any changes to rpmod. We would use a command like this:Kael Sekura wrote:Otherwise, if not then perhaps as a toggle would be nice. It's always nice having options. Thumbs up from me.
Or perhaps if you don't want to toggle around all possibilities, but just between watching or not the text from afar, it would be like this:set k1 "rpc_chatRange_mode 1; set range vstr k2"
set k2 "rpc_chatRange_mode 2; set range vstr k3"
set k3 "rpc_chatRange_mode 3; set range vstr k4"
set k4 "rpc_chatRange_mode 0; set range vstr k1"
set range "vstr k1"
vstr range
bind KEY vstr range //replace KEY with any key you desire
In any of these cases, you start with default, and all you need to do is put this code into an autoexec.cfg file; create it in the rpmod folder if you don't have one yet. once you play again, they key you bound will let you toggle the chatmode.set k1 "rpc_chatRange_mode 1; set range vstr k2"
set k2 "rpc_chatRange_mode 2; set range vstr k1"
set range "vstr k1"
vstr range
bind KEY vstr range //replace KEY with any key you desire
At least, that's what I'm thinking about...

Read up, Aslyn. Ruluk is simply suggesting a way to bind a key to toggle the different chat modes in RPMod.

RTM, folks. Nivek laid this out, already. If you want to be able to change chat modes via binds, simply bind the different modes you want to separate keys. To be detailed...Nira'kalen'nuruodo wrote:Read up, Aslyn. Ruluk is simply suggesting a way to bind a key to toggle the different chat modes in RPMod.
Code: Select all
/bind <key1> rpc_chatRange_mode 2
/bind <key2> rpc_chatRange_mode 0

Ok I get it now. So I guess there's no need for this thread if it's been solved.

It would be an interesting addition if there was a way to limit it through doors and walls. For instance, if there is a closed wall between you and a person (i.e. the cantina and the training room), the wall should register as the maximum distance away so that you don't hear the people on the other side.
I don't really know if that's possible but it would be a welcome addition if so.
And even though your suggestion was already there Cairn you taught me and a few other people what to do as a result, so kudos!!

I guess you'd first have to be absolutely sure that all rooms were leak-proof, and then find some sort of newly-scripted command to make it happen, point is that JKA was only made to block sounds from behind doors and walls that weren't directly connected to the other side via an opening, so I somehow doubt it'll be possible.
