Patch system?

Is it possible to create some sort of patching system?

Kinda like a JKA Launcher that downloads updates directly to your rpmod folder, down to the most recently added files, as well as files that you do not contain yet. I'm sure someone better than me at this can give a better explanation, but you get the drift.

This system would make life much easier, if we run it before we launch jka. Heck if its a launcher we can have it give us the option to connect either to the Galaxy or Temple server, but that's neither here nor there. Maintaining hilts, skins, maps, and possibly the comms and datapads being discussed would be extremely easy and convenient.

I'd guess it'd just connect to the RPMOD server and download all the files from a certain folder, whatever folder you host the pk3s in presumably.

One could even make a guest portal for hopefuls to make uploads (not required), so that even that would be diminished.

Think about it?

This was suggested here: https://www.jediholo.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5327

I agree it would be a good thing to have.

I know a bit about JKA servers, creating something like that is dangerous because I know some people that could use an autopatcher to download files they shouldn't have access to like server side account files etc.
It's like the allow download thing in JKA servers. If it's on there's simple ways of dling the server.cfg I believe the same principle could be applied to this. So security wise, I'd say no. The way things are although it's annoying to dl everything and it's time consuming it's much more safe.

I don't think it would be an issue, as people can only download files that are available publicly. They wouldn't be given access to the JKA servers FTP directly, only to some PK3s hosted on files.jediholo.net (skins, downloads, RPMod, etc.). Then it's a matter of trusting the JEDI admins. :)

For maximum security, these files should be downloaded over a secure connection (HTTPS) and be digitally signed for their integrity to be verified. Suffice to say, it's a bit time consuming to create such a launcher, although I like the idea.

Makes sense :)

Perhaps the time spent could ultimately pay for itself? :)

Course I have no idea how this would work at all, but maybe there's one out there already, anyone know?

That would be amazing, but there was a reason probably why it was shot down before.

It is possible. I have told a few people that I helped lead a roleplay clan myself, and a few have even participated in it, and that I had a program that did what is being suggested here.

The program would look into your folder containing the files, and compare it to whatever files it was programmed to read. I had all of the up-to-date files in a single folder on my computer, and the program was set to compare the files from that folder, to the files whoever was using the program. It then downloaded whatever was different and replaced them. It also had a button to start up JKA and automatically connect to my clan's RP server. It didn't give anyone access to anything that I didn't want them to have access to.

Like Soh said though, it is time consuming to make, and quite annoying to get working properly.. As well as being a constant job to make sure that all of the files were up-to-date.

I can vouch for that as well. It's a very nice addition, imo, and it'd be good to have with map updates and stuff of the likes.

This just reminds me of the one MMO I tried.
I'd come home after dealing with screaming kids off their meds, and want to play, but then get sad face because I'd have to wait for upwards of a hour or more because the game needed to update and install patches. Which in turn eats up your connection, so you can't do anything else online, unless you wanted to compound your wait time.

I'd be for this feature only if the patching is manually initiated and/or toggle-able.

I agree to this feature, but also agree with Master Tekeil. Easy to use, probably. Easy to make, probably not. Easy to maintain, maybe not even possible at the moment.

It is possible to make it manual, or automatic, it would depend on how Soh designs it I guess. If he even decides to do so. The program I was using had a list of all of the files that were in my folder and a little check-box next to each files name. You could 'check the box' for whichever files you want to redownload and then click whichever button that told the program to download the files for you. Or, you could just click one button that checks all of the files for you automatically, like I mentioned before, and replaces/downloads any files that do not match the up-to-date files. (which for JEDI would be a large amount of files, my RP was smaller so this wasn't really a problem.)

And realize that the downloads would be rare and most likely small. In our other RP clan, the patch would be uploading 100+ files at once.

RPMod files and JEDI files (skins, maps, packs) are all hosted on jediholo.net and kept up to date there, so I don't see a problem with maintenance.

In fact, the RPMod Web Installer already offers an option to download the latest versions of these files while installing RPMod. But there is currently nothing to regularly check if they need to be updated prior to launching the game.

Why not create a separate .exe patcher?

That way, you can completely choose when to run it. Problem solved for Alkur. :D

That is, of course, if you ever get to producing it. ;)
