Skinning issue - Tan

First post and I'm quite nervous on how I'm posting this. But generally I'm having trouble of making a tan for a youngling mode I'm attempting to reskin. I do not simply know what color to use and what layer property to use. So i need some advice basically. If it's in the wrong place/section feel free to eradicate it's existent.

Well, I'd recommend choosing your tan colour - brown or copper, then using Photoshop's Soft Light function (or a layer of said colour overlayed using soft light) with an opacity of 20-30%, depending on how dark you're going for. The only part where it'll get tricky is making sure it blends properly - skin edges can be a bit of a nuisance, particularly at the hairline!
But don't worry, this is the right section for your question. Have to admit, nice for us to get a skinning question instead of a request
And welcome to JEDI!

Thank you, but I'm using gimp sadly. (To poor 'nor a pirate). But I'll see what i can muster up on it and translate it to Gimp.
Edit:
Whoah, softlight works quite nicely. Thanks for the great advice.

You also could try using Overlay and/or Multiply, if that exists in GIMP. Just don't overdo it.

GIMP 2 has the burn tool. Check that one out.

Yeah, worked it out. But that other burn method works just as good. Though i find the helmet typically dull. Could i have the direct link of the "Jedi" ensign? Wish to place it on the helmet and on her robes.
