((Hey there,

I'm not usually one to post character tips, but here it goes; one way to help you think about your character, like how s/he will act and react to the galaxy around him/her. This will be done by determining the temperament of the char. Two options. Do 1 if you don't mind taking a little free test that may take you a few minutes to complete. You don't need to give your email or other such info. Do 2 if you just want to play it by ear and look over the temperaments one by one until you find your character's. 2 is the manual way. 1 is the automatic one.

My recommendation: Do 2 if 1 (the test) fails to be correct.

Before continuing: Temperament is basically how one's brain is hardwired to process thought and emotion. Don't be fooled, people often expand beyond this hard-wiring by making (TADA!): Personality, sometimes or frequently overrides temperament's authority over the brain. Another way of putting it; personality is what makes each character different. No exceptions. Even though there are 16 temperaments, there are unlimited personalities. Everyone is different. There are no 2 completely identical people, when you think in terms of personality with temperament.

Option 1:

Go the this site below in a new tab (ctrl+click for Firefox). There? Now, take the test by filling it in as your character would. Step into your character's shoes (if they have them on). Note this: By the way, the test below is not for personality, it's for temperament. I am curious why they named it personality.

http://kisa.ca/personality/

Done? You should have a result that will say something like INFP or ESTJ or something. Found your 4-letter-combo? Hold onto those four letters for a moment and find your letter combo below. Click on the link near it (as done before, use a new tab). Read about your character's temperament.

ESTJ: http://www.keirsey.com/4temps/supervisor.aspx
ISTJ: http://www.keirsey.com/4temps/inspector.aspx
ESFJ: http://www.keirsey.com/4temps/provider.aspx
ISFJ: http://www.keirsey.com/4temps/protector.aspx
ESTP: http://www.keirsey.com/4temps/promoter.aspx
ISTP: http://www.keirsey.com/4temps/crafter.aspx
ESFP: http://www.keirsey.com/4temps/performer.aspx
ISFP: http://www.keirsey.com/4temps/composer.aspx
ENFJ: http://www.keirsey.com/4temps/teacher.aspx
INFJ: http://www.keirsey.com/4temps/counselor.aspx
ENFP: http://www.keirsey.com/4temps/champion.aspx
INFP: http://www.keirsey.com/4temps/healer.aspx
ENTJ: http://www.keirsey.com/4temps/fieldmarshal.aspx
INTJ: http://www.keirsey.com/4temps/mastermind.aspx
ENTP: http://www.keirsey.com/4temps/inventor.aspx
INTP: http://www.keirsey.com/4temps/architect.aspx

The above are all subtypes of four different temperaments; Guardian, Rational, Artisan and Idealist. Still with me? Each subtype of Guardian or Idealist is much different from the other.

So, you have your temperament? If so, read on, if what you got isn't right, try option 2. No problems? Read on. :D

Temperament has been used to help determine how a person will act around people, schools, jobs and more. Some people use it to help them make big choices. Some people use it to better understand why they have certain strengths in certain activities and weaknesses in others. Sometimes it's used to help find patches for weaknesses in a person, so they can move on.

Option 1, Part 2:

Found out a bit more about your character? Maybe? Maybe not? If you're sure you've found your character's type/temperament, read this repetition: Temperament is not personality. Don't care what statistics say. Fact is, some Rationals aren't going to act rational. This is simple; since there are many different people with different temperaments/personalities, characters will be challenged by the difference in the people around them. This challenge, along with the experiences they have otherwise will lead characters to develop a personality. I wont even attempt to help out with personality. Can't. Wont. That is generated by your biographies and RP time.

Got all that? I re-read this a few times myself.

Want to learn more? Reading the most general articles about the four types will help you expand your understanding beyond your own character. Here are the four types:

http://www.keirsey.com/4temps/guardian_overview.asp
http://www.keirsey.com/4temps/artisan_overview.asp
http://www.keirsey.com/4temps/idealist_overview.asp
http://www.keirsey.com/4temps/rational_overview.asp

Not enough? GREAT! I love talking about this stuff. Will gladly direct those interested to more resources.

Option 2:

Read all the articles below until you find one that describes someone like your character. Once you've found that correct article and read it, read part 2 of option 1 and you conclude this tutorial.

ESTJ: http://www.keirsey.com/4temps/supervisor.aspx

Was that clearly written? Did I miss something? Critique? :) Thanks for reading, hope you found/find some benefit from this. Special thanks to Dr. Keirsey And Briggs for > decade of research and improvement.

((A quote or two:
Knowing temperament helps us define what takes the least energy for us to do - what is most natural. But human beings also like a challenge, so people usually experiment with aspects that are not as easy. For instance, a person who scores Introverted may challenge himself to become more Extraverted so he can become a public speaker.
-W. Keirsey

sounds something like another quote;
Every person is born with inherent abilities and weaknesses. If we merely stick to the abilities we'll never taste the defeat of our weaknesses. I pride in actuality that I was born with an array of powers that aid my boundless, endless journey to freedom of the weaknesses a comforting prospect.
-Unknown

Mash it together and get:

Adding another angle to the thread. Alkur added an angle, Sared added one, I added a couple, but the thread needs all it can get. Once again thanks for all the posts, please keep sharing. <3 :)))

Come up with a few defining characteristics about your character—physical, personality, background. These can be deep rooted, but that does not mean they are constantly on the tip of your tongue when you play your character.

Making a "whole other person", is daunting and tedious. Plus, if you're mildly obsessive-compulsive, you won't be able to handle having to constantly stick to a detailed personality.

Build a foundation, and allow room for development through play.

Yes and no. It's the test I sent. Not a personality test though, temperament.

You might also get a kick out of The Hartman Color Code. It essentially breaks down personality types by motivator.

Incoming copypasta:

RED (Motive: POWER)—These are the power wielders. Power: the ability to move from point A to point B and get things done, is what motivates and drives these people. They bring great gifts of vision and leadership and generally are responsible, decisive, proactive and assertive.

BLUE (Motive: INTIMACY)—These are the do-gooders. Intimacy: connecting, creating quality relationships and having purpose, is what motivates and drives these people. They bring great gifts of quality and service and are generally loyal, sincere, and thoughtful.

WHITE (Motive: PEACE)—These are the peacekeepers. Peace: the ability to stay calm and balanced even in the midst of conflict, is what motivates and drives these people. They bring great gifts of clarity and tolerance and are generally kind, adaptable, and good-listeners.

YELLOW (Motive: Fun)—These are the fun lovers. Fun: the joy of living life “in the moment”, is what motivates and drives these people. They bring great gifts of enthusiasm and optimism and are generally charismatic, spontaneous, and sociable.

(I would strongly suggest reading their own website, the wiki entry on it, as well other free information sources on the topic, as they go into further detail in regards to each color's strengths, weaknesses, as well as how people of different color types interact with each other.)
Spoiler Alert wrote:At the time that I (as in Aaron, "the RL me") first created Sared, I was very much a white/blue person. I wanted to push outside of what is myself, without completely breaking away from what is familliar to me, so I've tried to play him as much more Yellow/White in his earlier time at Dac, with a slow transition into a Red/Blue (with a bit of white mixed in) about the time the JEDI fled Yavin 4.
I will make the disclaimer that a not single one of these personality types is the end-all, be-all to defining a person's (or a character's) attitude, temperament, drive and personality, but they do give very solid grounding points from which to start.

I will also state my opinion (take with a shaker of salt please), that it is much easier if you are, say, an INTJ, or a yellow/blue person, to play a character with similar traits. I believe that this can be a good thing and a bad thing. I believe it can be a good thing because if you know yourself well enough, then you can more easily make decisions and act as your character because it will come more naturally to you. I also believe it can be a bad thing because, if not handled responsibly, you'll no longer be playing a character, you'll be playing yourself in a Star Wars environment, and I don't believe that is role-playing. It's also been my experience that when I try to RP as 'myself, in a different world/body' instead of role-playing a different person, I begin to loose objectivity.

I know it may sound a bit extreme, but I think this aptly-fitting quote from Inception fits the sentiment quite well.
Inception wrote:Dom Cobb: I know this bridge. This place is real isn't it?
Ariadne: Yeah. I cross it everday to get to the college.
Dom Cobb: Never recreate places from your memory. Always imagine new places.
Ariadne: You gotta draw from stuff you know, right?
Dom Cobb: Only use details. A...a...a street lamp or a phone booth. Never entire areas.
Ariadne: Why not?
Dom Cobb: Because building a dream from your memory is the easiest way to lose your grasp on what's real and what isn't real.
</opinion>

As Plato and many other Greek philosophers stated time and time again "Know thyself". I would take that as far as to say that you should know yourself, then know your character. I hope that by reading this post you might find inspiration for further deepening your own role-play!

Hello Ommar,

Firstly, I want to thank you for contributing what you have so far in regards to the potentially interesting personality tests which can help define ones character in certain ways in a different perspective from that which is already offered.

However, I'm not sure that the JEDI forums is the appropriate place for you to 'blog' over these tests or continue to expand on what theories you may have about encorportating these tests into JEDI or Character Development within JEDI. There are many websites which will host your very own blog and you are also well within your rights to invite JEDI members to continue reading your blog there.

There are many guides to character development supplied by the communities members, and you have now shared a link to a personality test which you obviously hold a high level of interest in and by all means. However, if you wish to discuss theories over it and places of education for deeper understanding, I would advise seeking another means of outlet for your own personal blog.

Apologies if you disagree with my statement but I believe that while the tests may prove of use to help in some areas of Character development as well as allowing someone the chance to potentially have a deeper understanding of themselves, but it won't have much use as an IC tool and when the discussion leads to personal blogging and places of education for this test itself, then I think it's best to take the discussion off site. Please feel free to link the members to a new blog should you create one.
