[Completed] Dating objects in Archaeology

Post by Xishala »

  • Subject Requested:
Dating inorganic objects
  • Public/Private Lesson:
Private, though if others are interested I wouldn't be opposed as long as the class size remained small
  • Availability:
I'm relatively open, message me personally to schedule something
  • Reason For Request:
As a member of Archaeology, I think this would be extremely useful in artifact identification and recovery. I don't understand the equipment nor the method on how this is usually done, and don't have other Archaeologists to probe for information on this.
  • Additional Information:
We recovered an sword of fine craftmanship, dual bladed, made of some lightsaber resistant material that carries a subtle registration in the force. The object confounds me, and any information gleaned could help in properly identifying it.

Re: [Open] Carbon Dating in Archaeology

Post by Xintr Wolfe »

If possible, I would love to join this class. I am familiar with tools to evaluate material fatigue, wear and tear, but have never tried to date anything. I would also be interested to learn about the proceedures for handling and sampling of artifacts.

If that is acceptable to you, Xishala, and the master who takes up the class of course.

Of course, I feel like this exists perfectly at the cross-roads between the Artisans and Archives departments, it only makes sense if both aspects are represented

Though not an archaeologist per se, I have a solid understanding of the physics behind it, and specifically about the uranium radiometric dating (in contrast to carbon dating, used for organics, Xintr).

Also, I have dabbled in cross-referencing sources as part of my post-Knighthood Force Theories studies. Not as extensively as dedicated Archivists, but more than enough to know about the subject.

Would you like to allow me to cover the subject?

I'd be extremely appreciative. Initially I was confused about carbon dating, and have since realized it generally applies to organic compounds and the transference of isotopes. There's been some experimental studies about using this method in dating weaponry, but, I can't make heads or tails of it. Thanks for taking an interest in this, I can't wait to schedule with you.

Xishala and I had a private session in this. If anyone else wants a lesson, they can ask me here again or in private.
