Additional Information: Why did the Order's position on emotional attachments change over time? What does the Code say about these topics? An instructional lesson on the nature of attachments and emotional connections for those who would become jedi. The end will be devoted to a discussion regarding the topic, focusing more on questions and clarifying statements.

Foreword:

Two important parts of the code to remember throughout the lesson:

-Of the Tenets, "Community before individuals"

-Of the Guidelines, "Be mindful of feelings, as they interfere with intuition from the Force."

Part I - Why did the Order's position on emotional attachments change over time?

Around 4000 BBY, The High Council strictly forbid marriages and deep attachments as a preventative measure.

While it works for a long time, there is common belief that this ruling inadvertently builds a sense of isolation in Jedi that makes them unable to sense the eventual decay and corruption of the Order.

Once Luke Skywalker rebuilds the Order, he opts for the early era policy where marriages and romantic relationships are permitted. Luke Skywalker's ability to overcome the Galactic Empire and ultimately redeem his father is borne out of his love and personal attachments.

Part II - What does the Code say about these topics?

Emotion, yet peace

Passion, yet serenity

Do not act for personal power

Use the Force to serve the Force

Above all else, is the will of the Force

The Light Side is a long and narrow path, but it is the true calling from the Force and brings complete peace when practiced.

Harmony, peace, and compassion center oneself on the Force, allowing deeper connection and true understanding

Courage

Discipline

Self-Awareness

Confidence

Wisdom

Dependability

Part III -

Love is a profound thing. It can push us to ignore our basic instincts to survive and prompt incredible sacrifices. Students of neurology learn that love will make our brains flood our systems with dopamine and oxytocin.

Love is an integral part of life as individuals and as a society. Feelings of isolation cause stress and anxiety. Love and empathy allow us to ensure children are raised and nurtured. And bonds can boost resilience and provide purpose and satisfaction.

Love as romance
Love of family
Love of friends
Love of community
Loving yourself
Love of nature

As Jedi, we are asked to value community over individuals, do you think this can include love?

If we condition ourselves to find purpose in relationships, should we consider that an unhealthy attachment?

Should the concept of a 'padawan brother' or 'padawan sister' compel us to feel familial love and sacrifice for one another?

Is love too dangerous for students to indulge in?
