Mind Trick (noise)
Hi hi,
I vaguely recall this subject matter coming up before but i couldn't remember the outcome nor find anything in the suggestion thread.
Is there any particular reason why Mind Tricking someone casts out a noise? Even at the lower levels? It seems a little odd to me that you would be trying to fool someone but also announce to them that your doing so.
It wouldn't be the first time i've cast mind trick when someone was not looking at me, nor had seen me before hand but as it plays the sound, i get the sudden responce, "I know you're there Kael!"
Or i'm hidden, someone walks on past me, I cast MT and they go.. "What was that noise?"
It's very disruptive and although it could be ignored ooc, peoples initial reactions both IC/OOC upon hearing a noise is to turn and question it. Which is normal and fine but not the point of mind trick in my opinion. It's to continue going on, unseen or heared (unless of course you make a noise walking or roll or something. that's fine)...
anyhew, just a thought, would appreciate feedback
cheers
Kael

I'm 99% sure that they can only hear it if they have a sense level that equals or is greater than yours. They shouldn't mention a sound, but it's realistic to roleplay that you felt something. 99% of Jedi that can cloak do it by manipulating the minds of those around them, removing all traces of their presence (all except Gabe and his spawn). It's reasonable to think that if someone has a sensing level greater than or equal to your cloaking ability, they'd be able to feel that something is amiss.

I agree with you last point Corinth about those who have a greater or equal ability. But guests and hopefuls alike can hear me with no ability to sense. Your above comment is a good idea though. maybe that's what was dicussed and we're waiting for the next release for it.... not sure..Corinth Alkorda wrote:I'm 99% sure that they can only hear it if they have a sense level that equals or is greater than yours. This behavior is by-design.
Please see this post for an accurate explanation of how Mind Trick works and my general feeling about Force power sounds.
Long story short: sounds are OOC feedback for the players, that can translate to IC feelings (not sounds) if appropriate for the concerned characters.

Ah, I was sure there was something before. Appreciate the link Soh. I do understand the above but still think it's a little bit disruptive. It would have been great, in my opinion were you able to do the same regarding the sound as you did with breaking the ability with sense. So only those with equal or greater sense to your mind trick would hear the sound.Soh Raun wrote:This behavior is by-design.

It's a shame the above has proven so difficult. I'll just have to continue PM'ing people - ::waves hand:: You heard nothing! lol and hope people start picking up on the fact that the noise is meant to be ooc...Soh Raun wrote:Make the Force Sense sound client-only, i.e. only the person using it will hear it (thus making it purely gameplay feedback). Currently there is no way of doing this (sounds are broadcasted to everyone), but I'll try to find one rather than removing the sound completely.

Its really up to the people as to how indepth they want to go. I have my own sort of rag-tag mod of various changes that I find bothersome, I'm not entirely certain if MT is edited or not.
But ultimately, if people want to be donks about something like that, should you really be roleplaying with them?

I tend to find that if somebody mind tricks Vantus and I walk on to go along with the idea that I cannot see them, I get a PM from that individual saying "I just mind tricked you" or "come back".
If your character wants to be discovered or wants attention, why hide?
If I hear the noise - I look. It's an OOC reaction to a sound.
I want to know if it's intended for me or for somebody else. Plus the above explination has also led to this.

lol i've never done that... sounds more like an ooc gloat to me. That does suck.Vantus wrote:I tend to find that if somebody mind tricks Vantus and I walk on to go along with the idea that I cannot see them, I get a PM from that individual saying "I just mind tricked you" or "come back".

It's the same idea behind the force Speed noise.
Where Vantus doesn't exclaim "Oh! What was that speedy, whooshy sound?!", He can at least acknowledge that an individual is using a strange ability, perhaps through his force sensitivity.
Though... It's kind of obvious when they fly past you at 50mph.
